For many years, Bulgaria was one of Europe’s best kept secrets. But then suddenly something happened when big charter companies like Star Tour, Apollo and others at the end of the 1990s started to sell the Black Sea coast in their programmes. Today, the Black Sea coast is among Scandinavians’ most popular destinations – most of them go there because the Bulgarian coast is still cheap and meets all requirements for a successful seaside holiday: nice beaches, pleasant climate and lovely swimming water. But for adventurous people, even more exciting experiences are waiting, if you travel inland, away from the coast. It is in the countryside and in the mountains that you stand the greatest chance of seeing the original culture and getting close to what makes Bulgaria one of Europe’s most exotic adventures.
